It says „ with each match played, players earn a Commendation…“ but doesn’t say how after. Is a Commendation earn with „player played a match“ or with the scores somehow in the match?

It is for playing a match. Think of it as a checkbox for the week. Their main purpose appears to be for handing out the widgets at the end.
