Iron Kingdoms - Timeline and chronological fiction

About

Hello, and welcome to the Iron Kingdoms. This post and the linked Legacy Fiction posts are intended as an archive of the history of the Iron Kingdoms and it’s narrative fiction from before Iron Kingdoms: Requiem. The final event on this timeline, and the newest fiction to be posted to the Community, is part two of the Henge Hold Scrolls, covering the final moments of the Claiming in 612 AR. For any events after 612 AR please see the Iron Kingdoms: Requiem books or the Warmachine App on iOS and Android.

Additionally, here’s some general links to sources of Iron Kingdoms fiction. I hope to get all of these on the timeline as soon as I am able:

What happened to the dragon-anthak which was fought over right before grymmkin?

I have a lot of my no quarters labeled with what is in them. Here’s a few things I have.

NQ7 has a lions coup scenario, and a comic of the events that took place.
NQ50 includes the siege of Caspia for Birk Kinbrace’s perspective
NQ60 includes a major assault during the Scharde Invasions

What you done is really really expansive. I love it! I’ll try to note anything I can that you can add.

That storyline is concluded in the novel “Wrath of the Dragonfather”, which you can get digitally from Amazon or at the DriveThruRPG link in the top post here.

Looking for some feedback/suggestions on the formatting of this timeline. Originally my plan was to copy the timeline from the old PP website and add links to fiction in the appropriate spots. This is running in to a few problems.

  • Events in the timeline for a given year don’t necessarily have anything to do with fiction from the same year. This means that some years have an entry in the “Related Fiction” column that isn’t actually related at all to the event described on the timeline, it just happens to take place around the same time. Similarly, for fiction that takes place in a year that isn’t on the timeline I have no event to put in the timeline unless I summarize the story being linked.

  • Once the Warmachine storyline kicks off the density of fiction goes way up. Between all the No Quarters, leagues, novels, and anthology books there’s going to be years with a dozen or more entries for Related Fiction.

  • I had the idea at one point to provide collections for specific factions or characters so that someone who wants to read about, say, Kromac could easily find all the places Kromac is mentioned. This isn’t really compatible with the timeline in its current format. It may just end up needing to be its own topic either way.

The third question is one further down the line so I’m back burning that for now, but I’m looking for suggestions or ideas on how to tackle the first two issues.

One thought I had was to keep the timeline mostly as-is and rename the third column to “contemporary fiction”. This could go hand-in-hand with merging any places where the same year shows up multiple times with a single line for the year and bullet points for multiple entries in that same year if the forum formatting allows for it.

Another idea would be to split out the fiction links timeline and the summary timeline, but I’d rather not do that because I like the idea of being a single stop for referencing.

For the timeline of the Warmachine narrative itself the only idea I have to is make a few Replies just breaking that down in greater detail and linking to those replies from the original Topic post.

If anyone else has thoughts or ideas please let me know. I’d like this to be a powerful and convenient resource for sorting through the trove of fiction that has previously been somewhat scattered and how to track down and I’d love to hear what people think about the best way to do that.

For the dense events or anything that spans a lot of time it might be best to just let it at starting times. And yeah I would just expect the warmachine years to just be long, probably no way around that

Yea I’m thinking I probably just need to break out different posts for each edition story so I have space to hit the major points

Maybe put start and end dates.

Feedback/suggestions on the formatting of this timeline.

Split the time-line to region/major characters lines.

Mayyybe? I feel like that gets really complicated though because of how they overlap. Even splitting it into “Warmachine narrative” and “Hordes narrative” suddenly becomes duplicative once the dragon athanc plotline starts and you get Circle, Cryx, Legion, and Cygnar all interacting.

I would like to have a separate resource for tracking different characters’ appearances eventually, but I think that might be best as it’s own thing after the overarching timeline is done.

Sure, but think it like an excel sheet: Each column is character/area. Once the interaction takes place just copy-pasta interaction to each cell like ‘battle at X’ for Nemo, Butcher and whoever.

I think that would be great for a spreadsheet, but I want to make sure this stays easily-readable on this forum and a spreadsheet with 100 character columns will not look good here lol. Three columns is already pushing the available space.

Don’t suppose you’d mind it if I copied some of the dates you have for the spreadsheet of content listings?

I’m not sure what’s there that you’re missing, but it should be straightforward enough to cross-reference.

Of course, no problem at all! If you find anything I’m missing please let me know and I’ll get it added.

I’d love to find a way to get links to relevant videos of yours in there too!

At the moment, I don’t think linking my content will be of much use, very little of it is particularly of that chronicle kind of presentation which would fit with this timeline (or covers such a long span of time, it’s a little impractical). Also I’m taking a hiatus to get things sorted out (and figure out some sort of motivation again).

In the meantime, though, I can provide a link with some(/most?) of the free WMH-related content (all in pdf form) which I was able to source, which some may find useful if they want to print out for themselves… (the content covers MkII league content (if someone can source the MkI league content in a presentable format, that’d be great), the MkIII starter warnoun short stories, and Acts of War III)
